Nice list of domains today to kick off the week. Lesson learned by me and might be useful for you... I had an offer on a domain and after some back and forth the potential buyer offered mid four figures for the domain. I put together a pretty agressive sales pitch and data and was trying to get upper four figures. They told me a time or three that they couldn't go that high but I had a good feeling I was dealing with a company so I held firm and told them I was willing to hold the domain for the next 20 years until I got the price I was looking for. Yeah, they walked. I tried to send an email after two weeks of not hearing back from them but no dice. I pressed my luck on the domain and lost, lesson learned. If a potential buyer tells you they reached their max and they say it a few times you should really consider at that point what is the likelihood of getting significantly more from someone else in the future. In retrospect I wish I took the offer but I came away with a valuable lesson instead.

There's a couple of very solid auctions running at Snapnames right now that already started (so you can't jump in) but regardless it will be interesting to see what they end at. A few that I'm keeping my eye on... uploader.com, rewards.net, penis.net, fhz.com, and fzo.com.

I had a few emails with a domainer and it is always interesting to hear another person's experiences or view and how they make money in the domain name industry. You know the big boys are selling their domains for 5 or 6 figures. A lot of people are trying to make it in the four figure sweet spot area. And then you have people who buy domain names for $9 and go and sell them for $79. The hell you say. Well, it was a very interesting take on a way to approach domaining. You buy a ton of hand regged domains (you do need a good eye to pick things that are decent) and immediately park them so that you can start to earn some money while you're attempting to sell them. You then begin to spend 8 hours a day emailing potential end users about domains that they may be interested in hopes of driving a sale that only will earn you a profit of $70. Because you send out so many emails, and because your selling price is very low you are aiming to drive 4-5 sales a day which is an achievable goal when you are able to scale up, automate, etc... $300 in profit a day on average is a six figure earning per year. And when you find someone who buys a name you can then present them with 50 or 100 other relevant names to them that you currently own, or in the future, and that 1 sale could turn into many sales or recurring sales. It is definitely a hustle way of domaining but you can't knock the hustle when it returns six figures.

What was your take on the live auction yesterday? $565k is a nice amount, but when $460k of that was for 2 domains it dampens it. Those two high sales went to online bids so it shows the importance of allowing people to bid online on live auctions, otherwise we'd be talking about results that were around $100k instead.

A couple of interesting domains in auction that I'm following, NYG.com is on auction at Namejet and that auction ends today. Current bid is a little under $29k but the reserve has not been met yet. Why wouldn't the New York Giants buy this? They spend mid six figures on a bench player to sit there for a year, why not pick up a great shortener domain for a fraction of that that they get to keep forever.
Over at Snapnames Glue.com's current bid is a little over $22k with 2 days to go. Wonder why Elmer's didn't pick this up a while ago. If you had to buy one of the two which would you go with?

I contacted a domain owner about their name and asked them if their domain was for sale and if they had a price for the domain name. I got an email back that said "Not available for under $10 million".
If you are going to quote a price on a domain name you should start high and this way you have the ability to come down. But when you throw out a ridiculous price like that you run the risk of turning the potential buyer off. I am not writing back to this domain owner. The ridiculous price quote shows me two things... First, the domain owner is unrealistic and more then likely I will get nowhere with them other then have a frustrating few back and forth emails. Secondly, it shows they do not understand the market and they don't know about (or care about) comparable sales. It can be very hard to attempt to deal with an uneducated owner. They read the headlines that Sex.com sold for millions of dollars and that is their basis for their pricing.
Negotiating is an art, one that very few master and I still have a long way to go in. But what I have found works best for me is when I am able to make concessions in pricing as the buyer feels like he has haggled me down, yet I am still getting a price that I knew all along I'd be happy with. If you're going to set that first price you need to balance throwing out a realistic number that won't turn the buyer off and that can also allow the buyer to knock down the number enough to be happy with, while you land in a spot you wanted to land on.

I told you yesterday if you were a betting man then you should bet the Ravens. If you listened you can buy some domains today with your winnings and there's a decent list today of domains going to auction.

Superbowl Sunday is here, always a lot of exposure for the domain name industry when GoDaddy runs their ad with girls in skimpy clothing. If you're a betting man I'd go with the Ravens plus the points (I think they win outright but the points are a safety net).

Superbowl time is when a lot of the domain registrars have some big promotions. I earlier today mentioned GoDaddy is having a 47% off sale and I'd expect a lot of other companies to follow suit. The Superbowl gets a lot of exposure for the domain industry and if other domain companies are not going to get spots on the Superbowl then they at least need to come up with big time promotions to compete with GoDaddy. It's always nice to start out the year with some super sized savings...

You ever submit your domain name to an auction and you get a reply that it doesn't meet their quality requirements or that your reserve price is too high and then when the auction goes live you see about 30 domains that your domain blew away in both quality and pricing? In the beginning I used to think I just did not understand domain names enough and I thought something was good quality when it wasn't. Now my thinking is that the auction companies give some special treatment to people and put some crap names and/or high reserves in the auction because they have some kind of special relationship with the domain owner. Not exactly fair but such is life.

You know when you come across a domain name you love and you wish nobody else found it but of course everyone else does... got one of those on the list today... PunchingBag.com. Love the name. Already got a bunch of bids on it so it won't be going cheap in the end though.

I was direct navigating to domains last night and I landed on one that has the GoDaddy expired landing page on it says the domain expired on 1/14/2013. I looked in GoDaddy auctions to see if an auction was going on for it but it wasn't there so I got curious as to how long after a domain expires at GoDaddy will it take to go to GoDaddy auctions. After a little searching the answer is 26 days after it expires it will hit the GoDaddy auction block.
There's a list of what happens after Day 1, 5, 12, 19, etc... when a domain registered through GoDaddy expires so if you're interested in seeing all the steps in the process you can check out
